Abstract
|
|
|
Transabdominal pulsed Doppler ultrasound was used to assess blood flow velocities and determine the pulsatility and resistance index from the umbilical artery in 325 normal pregnancies and 189 high risk pregnancies according to the gestational
weeks.
The pulsatility index(PI) and resisitance index(RI) were meaured as an index of placental resistance. As gestation advznces, the values for PI and RI declined progressively in normal progressively in normal pregnancies.
PI & RI value higher than the normal mean value plus 2 SD of each index for that gestational age previously reported was defined as abnormal. All high risk pregnancies except 14 cases have PI & RI value within normal limit. There were no
statistically
significant differences in the PE & RI of the numbilical blood flow in high risk pregnancies compared with normal pregnancies.
These data suggests that the analysis of umbilical artery blood flow velocity waveforms are unlikely to be of value in the differentiation between normal and high risk pregnancies.
